Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116
Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is one of his best-known, most popular and most accessible works. Like his fourth and fifth string quartets (1928 and 1934), the piece is in five movements, arranged in what is called an "arch" form, in which the first and fifth movements are related, as are the second and fourth, with the third movement functioning as the keystone of the arch. The Concerto's opening bars present a theme of rising fourths in cellos and basses, answered by tremolando strings and fluttering flutes in Bartók's characteristic "night music" style. Trumpets, pianissimo, chant a pungent, short-phrased chorale on which the theme of the main Allegro vivace is based. A lyrical second...

Prokofiev Violin Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 94a (Mintz, Bronfman)
Originally conceived as the Sonata for flute and piano (1943), this work immediately became more popular in its violin version. Even today it is still more commonly encountered in concert and on recordings than its sibling, not least because violinists outnumber flutists. Cast in four movements, this sonata transcription betrays little of its grim wartime origins, mixing Prokofiev's lyrical war...
Prokofiev Violin Sonata No. 1 in f minor, Op. 80 (Mintz, Bronfman)
Cast in four movements of approximately equal length and lasting about a half-hour, this tormented Sonata for violin and piano is among Prokofiev's finest works. The Andante opening panel begins with an ominous theme in the bass on the piano accompanied with death-rattle sounds of the violin. The mood remains tense as the violin struggles to steal center stage from the piano, finally doing so w...
Schnittke Violin Sonata No. 2, "Quasi Una Sonata" (Mints, Apekisheva)
Schnittke's second sonata for violin and piano (1968) was his first "polystylistic" work. He subtitled it "Quasi una sonata," which means "like a sonata," or "in the manner of a sonata." Schnittke called it "a sort of borderline case of sonata form," explaining that it was, in a sense, about the process of writing a sonata. "The form is called into question; it seems not to be achieved - and th...
J.S. Bach Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in d minor, BWV 903 (Schiff)
The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue is an extravagant work of virtuosity and bold harmonic structure. It is an extraordinary piece - large, sprawling, emotional, and unique in its character compared to the rest of Bach's music. The title of the piece comes from either the fugue’s chromatic melody, or from the startling modulations in the Fantasia. Either opinion is equally acceptable and debated. ...
Prokofiev Symphony No. 6 in e-flat minor, Op. 111
It is likely that Prokofiev’s 6th symphony is the most compelling evidence of his genius. The composition’s themes of tragedy, sorrow, anger, and finally hope and joy are communicated with a proficiency rarely found in all of symphonic literature. There's a wonderful article containing extensive commentary on this symphony: www.wrightmusic.net/pdfs/prokofiev-and-his-masterpiece.pdf The work sha...
Prokofiev Symphony No. 3 in c minor, Op. 44, "The Fiery Angel"
This symphony sometimes carries the nickname, "The Fiery Angel," after Prokofiev's opera of that title. The composer had composed that opera under contract to the Städtische Oper in Berlin and was to have it finished for that company's 1927 - 1928 season. But Prokofiev missed the deadline and, despite further negotiations with other opera companies, failed to attain a performance for the work. ...
Prokofiev Sonata for Solo Violin in D Major, Op. 115 (Špaček)
It is a little-known fact that Prokofiev's Op.115 Sonata was not originally intended as a work for solo violin, but rather for a group of twenty or so violinists playing in unison. The inspiration behind this unorthodox indication was Prokofiev's exposure to the practice, prevalent in the pedagogy of student violinists in Russia, of a group playing a solo violin part in unison. The three moveme...
Prokofiev Cello Sonata in C Major, Op. 119 (Han-na Chang, Pappano)

It was a remarkable pair of Soviet musicians that gave the 1950 premiere of Sergey Prokofiev's Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119: pianist Sviastoslav Richter and cellist Msitislav Rostropovich. By 1949, when he composed the sonata, Prokofiev was in the last half-decade of his life; together, the Sonata, the Seventh Symphony (1951-1952), and the Sinfonia Concertante for cello and or...
Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83 (Zimerman)
Brahms's massive 2nd piano concerto, in four movements rather than the usual three, opens with a marvelous, mood-setting horn call that seems to gather all the other instruments. The piano responding to its graceful melody with equally graceful arpeggios before embarking on a thorny cadenza that announces the virtuoso nature of the movement in no uncertain terms. But it is a virtuosity neither ...
Prokofiev Scythian Suite, Op. 20
In the summer of 1914, Prokofiev, the then-emerging enfant terrible of Russian music, traveled to London to meet with the ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Diaghilev commissioned the young composer to write a ballet with a prehistoric or fairy-tale scenario - hoping, perhaps, for the same kind of success he had recently enjoyed with the like-themed ballets of Stravinsky. The composer settled ...
Chopin Piano Concerto No. 2 in f minor, Op. 21 (Zimerman)
Chopin’s second piano concerto is more conventional than his first. The opening Maestoso movement of the piece is modeled on the concertos of Mozart's pupil, Hummel. The central Larghetto is similarly inspired by the Piano Concerto in G minor composed in 1820 by Ignaz Moscheles, but the closing Allegro vivace is original, a stylized Polish folk song. Within the movements, all the standard conce...
Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante in e minor, Op. 125 (Han-na Chang)
This work, also known as the Symphony-Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, is a reworking of Prokofiev's Cello Concerto in e minor, Op. 58 (1933 - 1938). The story behind Prokofiev's decision to recast the piece is fairly well known: in 1947, he heard the young cello virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich play the e minor concerto, a work the composer and the general public was dissatisfied with, and he t...

dense, too dense and expressive, contrapunctal, still battling with the great Stravinsky and showing to Paris that he can shock and much much more mature than te Scythian Suite.

Easily my favorite symphony
I lo e much of Prokofjev, but this music is really firesome and arbitrary at timed, pushy, too octatonish, competing with Igor, a work of a young slightly selfish pianist. Compare Bartok and Stravinsky:
Si la perfection est de ce monde...alors la voici.❤

I really wished we would have received more of Prokofiev’s genius which was sadly censored by the Russian government at the time.
The wizardry of piano playing that only Chopin can pull off. Always distinctive, always ethereal, always a mode of conveyance to another planetary existence. Thank you Chopin for such a legacy of perfection and sublimity.
10/6 second 4line bar
he really keeps the 3rd movement together from boiling over into incoherent chaos. i feel like in so many other performances of the precipitato that i hear, the tempo gets pushed and pushed, it gets drowned out in pedal, and musical gestures and thoughts just get lost in the commotion. great job by pollini is harnessing that industrial, machine riveting power to good musical use!

this is epic af i love it
Probably my favourite piano concert, for the incredible textures, fresh harmonic language and easily-read but efficient structure! And, you know, it just hits
Agerich does not understand this piece.
Cool
At the beginning you dream. At the scherzo something crushes your lullaby and changes your dream in unpredictable way. At the 3rd movement the dream of the beginning is twisted and you're stuck in it. Forever.

Great rendition of a wonderfully modern yet lyrical solo sonata. There seems like there's a weird glitch in the recording at 11:07 though. The b flat in the third measure of the page has a doorbell sounding harmonic. Strange.
Nicely performed.
My ears hurt listening to this trash.
do you hate prokofiev or just especially dissonant music
@@karrotkake Dissonance is great. This piece makes no musical sense.
@@Dichweed oh ok that's understandable, i mean im not a huge fan of this piece but i dont think its horrible
The form just does not make a lot of sense.

Wrong tempos everywhere.
Tedious.
Too many adverts ruin this amazing performance..
Oh dear, I was rather ignorant of Prokofiev so far, sure, I know and love a lot of his stuff very well (symphony 1, love for 3 oranges suite, peter and the wolf, romeo and juliet and some piano sonatas), but I´ve planned to listen to a lot more of his oeuvre and my word, this piano concerto is so much fun! Also an excellent performance
Kinda reminds me of Debussy in Mvt. I
